What is it?
Permaculture farming is working with what you naturally have, and giving back in order to get the best returns.
The term permaculture loosely refers to a sustainable design system that applies features and principles observed in natural ecosystems to the development of human settlements, in this case specifically farms.
This in turn explains why it was originally coined from the phrase ‘permanent agriculture’. To put it simply, permaculture farming is working with what you naturally have, and giving back in order to get the best returns.
Benefits of permaculture farming
Over the past several decades, the use of agricultural chemicals has drastically increased, affecting our climate in many ways. Therefore, many have turned to the philosophy of permaculture farming to help combat this change.
In addition to being environmentally friendly, permaculture farming is self-supporting and efficient. Permaculture in itself is a form of recycling. It uses and re-utilises whatever is available on the property.
Nothing in permaculture is wasted as everything within it serves a purpose. Crops are planted not just for profit, but to also help with the soil and local system. Even the insects that enter the farm assist with pollination.
