The birth of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving was declared a public holiday in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln.

The tradition of Thanksgiving celebrations began nearly 400 years ago, at the start of the 17th century.

History has it that the first Thanksgiving took place in 1621. Thanksgiving bears its origin from the harvest festival. Thus, it began as a day of giving thanks and sacrifice for the blessing of a harvest of the preceding year.

Throughout history, Thanksgiving in the United States was observed on various dates. On October 3, 1789, the first president of the United States, George Washington proclaimed it the day of thanksgiving.

It was not an official holiday until Sarah Josepha Hale, editor of Godey’s Lady’s book managed a campaign for the US congress. She wrote letters to politicians for around 40 years trying to make it an official holiday.
