What is a pork pie?

A pork pie is a traditional British meat pie, usually served at room temperature. It is a round, tall pie with cooked pork inside, although other shapes and sizes exist.

Where does it come from?

The word ‘pie’ first appeared in history by The Oxford English Dictionary back in 1303 and was a popular and well-known word by 1362. As such, it’s believed the modern pork pie originated in the Middle Ages when people encased meat in short crust to preserve it. Today, they come from across the United Kingdom and they are made using a variety of recipes. One particular town, Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, rose to prominence in the 19th century for its commercial and artisan pie production. Today, however, pork pies are found all over the United Kingdom under many brand names in supermarkets and butcher shops.

As a result, the pork pie today is a relatively common food and people often eat pork pie as a cold snack or part of a meal. Furthermore, improvements to the recipes mean that pies today are even more delicious and creative. To learn more click here.
